At the time of going to press the earthquake in Haiti was making headlines every day as the true magnitude of the disaster unfolded.
I immediately contacted Haitian-born celebrity manicurist and Scratch columnist, Myrdith
Leon-McCormack to send love and wishes as I knew she was watching the tragedy unfold from her home in the USA while waiting to hear news of her family and friends.
This is what she said…
“As a child I remember Haiti so differently. Peaceful, my happy school days, security, structure, my parents, dinners and great times. My dad remembers Haiti as beautiful. He’s proud of his race and culture.
The history of Haiti is extremely rich; the culture, the art world, the colours, the music and the food. Haiti is so much more then poverty.
I would like for people to look back. Take time to find Haiti on the map and read about its rich history; why the revolt took place. See and understand the sacrifices Haitians made to overcome the harsh fate facing black people at the time. It was the first free black country. Those Haitians were willing to die for their freedom – and many did.
We are a compassionate, loving and welcoming race. We want people to come back and visit the island, help us to rebuild it.
Help us to rebuild our pride, make it a wealthy, rich, vacation hotspot like it used to be. As nail artists we believe in colour and art, please incorporate the colours of Haiti to create a better world.
I love my industry because through this tragedy every race of people has called and shown me love and support while asking me what they can do to help Haiti and my missing family. I really am thankful for what I have – so I urge fellow professionals to please help me bring the nail trade to Haiti. I hope to build a nail/beauty school on the island. I can’t change all of Haiti, but what I can do is help rebuild my hometown. My mission is to start getting the word out there and slowly, with support from my peers, adopt a town in Haiti and start making a difference - just one day at a time - one town at a time.
Please continue to support the Carma Foundation www.carmafoundation.org. M2M and the nail team are standing
by my side ready to move and support any cause related to Haiti.
