5 ways to support deaf clients in the nail salon

It is estimated that one in three people in the UK have hearing loss, highlighting the importance of making your nail space as comfortable and inclusive as possible for deaf people.
Here are some methods to make your business more accommodating to clients who are hard of hearing…
1. PPE pointers
Many deaf people rely on lip reading, however the use of face coverings can make this impossible. If you wear a mask while working, consider one with a clear panel over the mouth or lowering the mask to aid communication. Speaking slowly and clearly, and repeating or rephrasing information, can greatly benefit clients who lip read.
2. Communication considerations
“Always ask the client what communication needs they have, as everyone is different,” reveals Annie Harris, advocacy officer at the Royal National Institute of Deaf People. “Don’t be afraid to communicate, as sitting in silence can feel awkward, and make sure you always speak to the client and not to their interpreter.
“Also, don’t shout as this will come across as aggressive and can be uncomfortable for hearing aid users.”
A great way to support clients with hearing loss is by using sign language. By learning a few basic signs, such as ‘hello‘ and ‘which colour?‘, it will help them feel more comfortable in the salon on their own. There are also speech to text apps available.
3. Social media modifications
Subtitle your video content on social media to ensure that deaf followers can enjoy your content. Subtitles are easily available on most social media platforms.
If your video features music, make sure it is not louder than the person speaking. If you have a staff member who uses sign language, invite them to create a video in sign language explaining your treatment offerings.
4. Hearing loop installation
Consider installing a hearing loop, or audio induction loop, in the salon: a sound system for use by people with hearing aids. Ensure it is serviced regularly.
5. Treatment information
Make sure you have information about each service you offer written down. Also have pictures of each treatment and pricing information clearly displayed, to help clients quickly and easily understand your services.
