Beau's lines

Have you heard of Beau’s lines on nails – but aren’t quite sure what they are? Here’s everything you need to know about the natural nail condition.

What are they?

Beau’s lines are horizontal ridges or dents on the nail plate, caused by a slowdown in the production of new nail cells by the nail matrix. These can be caused by trauma to the nail matrix, reactions to medications or underlying health factors including illness, stress, nutrient deficiencies and skin disorders, such as eczema and psoriasis.

Treatment

Take extra care when performing your service, as affected nails are likely to be particularly weak and fragile. Refrain from performing aggressive manicure techniques around the cuticles, as this can increase the likelihood of infection. Instead, focus on moisturising and nourishing the cuticle area.

Scratch Stars Natural Nail Specialist of the Year 2019 & CND™ education ambassador, Helen Burton-Ward, advises: “Do not attempt to buff the ridge out, as this will thin the nail plate further. Instead, opt for a ridge-filling base coat or primer to even out minor grooves. Reassure clients that the ridges should eventually grow out and advise them to consult a medical professional if the condition persists or recurs.”
