Gel nail educator & artist, Gemma Siverns, speaks to Scratch about her online community, Beyond The Brush (BTB) a supportive, educational space she created for nail professionals.

With over 25 years of experience in the industry, Gemma is a natural mentor. She began her journey in 2000, earning her NVQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy qualification, and has since worked her way from junior nail tech to salon owner.

“I understand every aspect of this industry, having experienced recessions, navigated a pandemic, and balanced business with family life through maternity leave,” shares Gemma. “I’m now diving into the crazy world of digital, and it’s all about growing, adapting and sharing what I’ve learned along the way.”

Why did you decide to launch BTB?

Beyond The Brush is a space I created from the heart. I wanted to build a supportive, friendly community for nail pros – a place where open, honest conversation can happen. Somewhere we can talk about the highs and lows of the industry and support each other in real time. It’s still in its infancy, but it’s growing organically, and I have big dreams for where it can go.

“As someone who’s been in the industry for over two decades, I wanted to create the kind of space I wish I’d had at the start of my journey.”

What can nail techs expect from joining the BTB community?

“BTB is all about connection and support. I share insights from my own experiences, business tips, real-life stories and practical guidance to help others grow their careers. I already offer mentoring and accredited 1:1 courses, but BTB allows me to reach people on a wider scale and hopefully make a difference to those who might not have access to formal mentoring yet. Ultimately, it’s a place to learn, laugh and lift each other up.”

What has the feedback been like?

“The feedback has been lovely! People appreciate the honesty and realness – especially when it comes to juggling business and mum life. That’s why I want BTB to reflect real life, not just the highlight reel. If I can help someone feel a little less alone in this industry, or more confident in their business, it’s all worth it.”

How can nail techs join?

“Nail techs can follow my Instagram channel via this link. It’s a channel connected to my main Instagram@polishedbygem, which has over 11,000 followers. From there, they can join the conversation, take part in Instagram lives and be a part of a growing community of like-minded pros.”

What future goals do you have for BTB?

“Eventually, I’d love to grow BTB into a full-scale community hub with resources, downloadable guides, online events and even a podcast! I have so much knowledge and experience from the last 20+ years, and if I can use that to help others feel supported and empowered, that’s what it’s all about for me.”
