Brush-on builder gel is an ever-popular request at the nail desk – but what is it, and when should it be used?

Brush-on builder gel is a more convenient variation of traditional builder gels, which are housed in pots. Packaged in a bottle with an integrated brush, the product allows for quick and easy application. Same as traditional builder gels, it is cured under LED or UV light and can create strong, durable and long-lasting nail overlays, build shape and extend nails. Removal is a soak-off process.

Sara PintoSara Pinto, product director at Andreia Professional, explains: “Brush-on builder gel allows for quick, precise enhancement of the nail, and its strong adhesion, durability and lightweight feel have helped to make it an essential product in many nail kits.”

Builder in a Bottle™/BIAB™

Builder in a Bottle™ or BIAB™ was invented by The GelBottle Inc (TGB). The nail brand describes the product as ‘a robust foundation that supports and strengthens nails while offering a flawless, glossy finish’. Owing to its popularity, many people use ‘BIAB’ to refer to all brush-on builder gel products –  but it should be noted that it just refers to TGB’s trademarked formula.

When to use brush-on builder gel

Scarlett Senter, multi award-winning nail artist & Kirsty Meakin brand ambassador, explains: “For clients with brittle or weak natural nails in need of extra protection, the product can create strong yet lightweight enhancements and short to medium extensions to help aid growth. Longer extensions require a stronger, more structured system like hard gel or L&P acrylic.”

How does brush-on builder gel differ to gel polish?

While gel polish is suitable for clients seeking a low-maintenance manicure that lasts around two weeks, it’s less durable than builder gel. Brush-on builder gel is ideal for clients who want longer-lasting results, added strength or support for weak or damaged nails.
