On its website, LGBT+ History Month designates February as a time ‘to celebrate [the] rich and diverse history, herstory and theirstory’ of the LGBTQ+ community. Each year, the campaign adopts a theme and highlights five historical figures of particular significance.

Throughout the month, it shares daily posts on its Instagram profile, showcasing queer histories from around the world, with the aim of raising awareness of the long struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and the individuals who helped pioneer this fight.

Each year is represented by one of the 12 zodiac animals, with 2026 ushering in the Year of the Horse – or more specifically, the Fire Horse. Representing vitality, energy and strength, the Fire Horse is said to encourage personal growth and adventure.
