Do nails need to breathe?

One of the most common misconceptions in the nail world is the idea that nails need to ‘breathe’.

To support understanding, let’s take a look at the science behind the topic…

Whether you’re a regular at a salon or someone who enjoys using nail polish to do your own manis, it’s likely that you’ve heard advice about taking breaks from products to ‘give nails some air’. But the truth is, nails do not need to breathe.

Read on for a more detailed explanation…

Debunking the myth

Globally renowned nail expert & scientist, Doug Schoon, details the main reasons why nails do not need to breathe via the NailKnowledge education portal.

In summary, the points he makes are:

1. Nail plates are not alive. Once the nail matrix produces new nail cells, they die and harden to form the nail plate. Nails are made of keratin – a non-living material, meaning they do not require air or breathing time.

2. Nails do not have lungs, nor any ability to absorb air into the nail plate.

3. Everything the nail matrix and nail plate need to grow and function, including oxygen, is delivered by the bloodstream.

When to ‘take a break’

Though nails do not need a regular break from products, it is worth monitoring your nail health for any changes, as this is the only time it might be recommended to take a break.

In an interview with Refinery29, US nail pro & North America’s Star Nail Artist (NASNA) Season 1 champion, Anastasia Totty, explained: “Make sure you pay attention to nail health and watch out for changes in colour, thickness, or visible damage.”

Keeping nails healthy

To maintain nail health between treatments, focus on hydration and gentle protection. Apply cuticle oil regularly and take steps to protect nails, such as wearing gloves while cleaning and avoiding using nails as tools.

In essence, as long as your nails are healthy, you do not need to take breaks from products – so be assured you don’t need to ditch your salon appointments and can continue accessorising your claws!
