Revealed: how to choose a flattering nail shape

Though it is true that anyone can wear whatever nail style they desire, there are certain elements of nail shapes that tend to complement specific features. Let’s take a look at how to choose the perfect nail shape to suit your hands…
The first step in figuring out your ideal nail shape is to assess your hands: hone in on your fingers, nail bed and cuticle area, as the shape and size of these will determine the nail shape that best suits you. Top tip: use a cuticle pusher to gently push your cuticles back to reveal their natural shape.
Next, determine your lifestyle needs: are long nails practical for your everyday routine, or would shorter nails be more convenient? Do you want a low-maintenance style or are you willing to spend time on nailcare and upkeep?
Finally, it is worth noting that experts have long stated that the best natural nail shape mimics the curve of your cuticle area. For example, if you have a deep ‘C’ cuticle, a rounded free edge will probably suit you most.
Squoval

A ‘clean girl’ classic, squoval nails are pretty universal in terms of who they suit. A low-maintenance shape, the squoval is perfect for anyone seeking practical sophistication. The shape balances out the hands’ proportions, meaning anyone can rock this style.
Square

Square nails are also often used to achieve the ‘clean girl aesthetic’, but with a bolder vibe than squoval. The sharper edges tend to add width, so this shape particularly suits those with long, slim fingers.
Round

Most people will find that their cuticle area is somewhat rounded, therefore round nails tend to be a go-to shape. The soft edges prevent snagging and damage, making the style practical and low-maintenance. Those looking to create the illusion of longer fingers may gravitate towards this shape.
Almond

Similar to their namesake nut, almond nails boast a tapered shape that narrows to a rounded tip. This adds elegance and length to nails, and though suited to all, those with wider hands and fingers may find this style works best for them.
Stiletto

You can’t get much bolder than a stiletto nail. With tapered sides that culminate in a sharp tip, this shape will definitely garner attention. The style can be prone to breakage and snagging, so is potentially high-maintenance.
Coffin/ballerina

Ideal for gel or acrylic extensions, coffin nails (aka ballerina nails) are often long, and feature tapered sides that come to a squared-off free edge. People with wider nail beds will be better able to support the length required for this style.
Lipstick

Celebrities such as Cardi B and Kylie Jenner have been known to rock lipstick nails. The shape consists of a slanted free edge that resembles the top of a lipstick, and, though it is possible to create this look on natural nails, extensions are usually the best way to wear this style. The asymmetry of lipstick nails tends to add width, complementing slim hands.
