After her Scratch Stars Mobile Nailist of the Year win in 2022, Surrey-based Clare Woodcock was determined to scoop the title for 2023, to prove to herself, her clients and Scratch that her first win was worthy.

“I wanted to show that I didn’t get lucky the first time, and that I deserve to wear that crown! Having been given the honour of writing a monthly print column for Scratch, I also wanted readers to feel its advice was coming from a justified source,” Clare explains. “I’m more proud to win for 2023, as I felt pressure to retain the title. Last year, I scored 98% on the mystery shop, so I was conscious of beating that this year, which I achieved with a score of 100%.”

Using her proven position to further help mobile pros, Clare has recently launched a Facebook support group for mobile nail techs and therapists. “Any mobile pros that are starting out, or those in the business that are looking for a support network to combat the struggles of working solo, I encourage you to join,” she shares. Alongside her column and Facebook group, Clare is director of communications for the Federation of Nail Professionals (FNP), a dedicated voice for the nail industry and advocate for raising standards. “We are re-building the membership platform for nail professionals and students, and are working on various benefits to help nail professionals enhance their businesses and fill gaps with education,” she comments. “A key project being worked on is the Hygiene Rating Scheme, which will launch in January to help raise standards and make consumers aware of the importance of hygiene when choosing a beauty practitioner.

“My role involves supporting these initiatives by increasing consumer awareness for all aspects of higher standards within our industry, and I have also been given the honour of judging at the Professional Beauty/FNP Nail Competitions.”

“Being able to treat clients in their homes creates a strong bond between us.”

Clare could not be more passionate about the opportunities that working on a mobile basis affords, in particular flexibility. “I can work around my family commitments and accept other opportunities that arise. For instance, I’ve used my nail tech skills to create crystal pieces for art projects and brand installations – including for Swarovski,” she reveals. At the time of writing, Clare is working on an installation for crystal artist, Sara Shakeel, which will be exhibited in Paris.

After working in PR for the music industry for many years, it was the birth of Clare’s second child that prompted her to seek a career change. “I was super stressed with events during the summer months and wasn’t sure how I could sustain that when both my boys started school. I wanted to do a less stressful role that made people happy,” she details. “After my nail tech moved away and I struggled to find a replacement, I decided to train in nails. I built my mobile business alongside my PR and event work, then when the pandemic hit, I focused my energy on making my mobile business as strong as possible.”

Clare describes her client base as ‘superwomen’, with the majority being working mums. “My clients take pride in having well-groomed hands and feet. As most are working professionals, they like a classy natural nail, and nail art is usually subtle. For example, I have one client who has made half moon nails her signature style,” she says.

So, what’s next for our Mobile Nailist of the Year? “I’ll be entering the Scratch Stars Awards 2024 and attempting to get myself into the Hall of Fame – although the pressure is going to be even greater to maintain that 100% mystery shop score!” she smiles. Alongside this, Clare isn’t one for a grand plan: “I just know I want to keep growing and doing what makes me happy. I believe that if you follow your instincts and are open to all opportunities that come your way, the right path will present itself.”
