Scratch chats to Sophie Day of Glam Nails about changing trends and pushing outside of your comfort zone…

“I began training as a nail tech August 2019,” Sophie shares. “I am trained to work with natural nails, of which I find seems to be popular at the moment.

“I was introduced to the idea of tekking by a friend working within the beauty industry who was thinking of ways to expand her salon. I was working from home as a virtual assistant at the time, and I decided to give it a go!”

“Initially I thought nails would be a day or two a week for me as a hobby, however it then became my full-time profession.

“Unfortunately, Covid hit, but I took the time at home to practice by watching videos on social media,” she recalls. “I found other nails technicians extremely helpful with designs and they would always be there to help and guide me through the best ways to create a design.”

“My favourite design has to be tortoiseshell and full marble designs,” Sophie enthuses. “Trends are changing all the time, but I always have friends who I practice new trends on.

“I think the main key to keeping up is practice. Some times when I practice, I think, next time I’ll try that design a different way.”

“I believe the best advice to give to other nail technicians is to have fun with your work, create designs out of your comfort zone and practice as much as you can.

“I find working in a salon has helped me along the way,” she smiles. “I have created so many friends in clients so it doesn’t feel like a job anymore.”

“It’s great to have a strong support system,” Sophie explains. “The industry is extremely busy, and at the beginning of your career it takes a lot of your personal time.

“My family and friends support me massively and always encouraging me to succeed. I see this as a long-term career and I’m always looking forward to the future.”

“I have so many nail idols,” she laughs. “I use social media for inspiration from fellow techs, such as Chars Gel Nails and B’Luxe Nails.

“I’m always looking forward to the upcoming seasons and what designs will be in fashion.”
