LGBTQ+ tech & drag nail artist: the nail industry allows me to embrace my truest self
By Guest Writer | 04 June 2025 | Feature, Tech Talk

Birmingham-based nail artist, Anthony Lloyd, shares about his LGBTQ+ journey and the important role nail artistry has played in it…
My journey as a member of the LGBTQ+ community has been a positive and affirming one. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been raised in a supportive family environment, and this foundation allowed me to embrace my authentic self without fear.
Professionally, I’ve also been very fortunate. Throughout my nail career, I’ve experienced welcoming and inclusive environments. Salons I’ve worked in and clients have embraced me for who I am, which has made my journey fulfilling. It’s been wonderful to be able to bring my whole self to work and feel accepted.
What does Pride mean to you?
To me, Pride is the affirmation of one’s worth and freedom to authentically express that worth without fear of judgment or prejudice. It’s about embracing and loving every facet of my identity, finding joy and strength in being unapologetically myself, and living in alignment with my values and desires. Societal approval and inclusive treatment is crucial, as it creates the safe space necessary for true self-acceptance and expression.
My nail art serves as a powerful manifestation of this personal pride.
Each set is an opportunity for self-expression, and a way to communicate my creativity, passions and aspects of my identity that might be less visible in other areas of my life.
Why are you proud to be part of the nail community?
The unwavering support within the community is remarkable. It’s heartening to witness brands engaging with and uplifting nail technicians, especially smaller artists. This collaborative spirit extends throughout, with experienced techs readily offering guidance and encouragement through social media and events.
Being a nail professional allows me to embrace my truest self. It’s a career that celebrates creativity and playfulness, and the joy of working with vibrant colours and dazzling glitters is inspiring. Knowing that my skills can contribute to someone’s wellbeing, by enhancing their hands and in turn, boosting their confidence, brings immense personal satisfaction.

Working with drag artists is also meaningful for me, because it allows for boundless creative expression. Being part of and capturing their vibrant world is incredibly rewarding.
How can nail businesses show their support for the LGBTQ+ community?
By celebrating and acknowledging LGBTQ+ individuals beyond Pride Month. This could involve showcasing LGBTQ+ artists or influencers, featuring diverse clientele in marketing materials year-round, and participating in LGBTQ+ events outside of June. Nail businesses could also partner with LGBTQ+ organisations or charities through fundraising or awareness campaigns.
Where can other LGBTQ+ nail techs go to find support?
I recommend following LGBTQ+ nail artists on social media. Engaging with their content and reaching out can lead to connections and support. Hashtags like #LGBTQNailTech can help you find relevant profiles.
