After leaving college early due to her mental health, Annissa Colton enrolled onto a nail and beauty course, qualifying by January 2019. “I absolutely loved doing nails from the very start, I feel like it is such a therapeutic and creative industry to work in. Following my struggles with mental health, it’s exactly the type of industry I needed.”

“I started off doing my nail treatments in a corner of my living room,” Annissa recalls. “I had all my products and colours set up but it just never felt professional or personal enough.

“During the lockdowns, I decided to completely convert another little room we had at the front of the house into my own salon. The process took a few weeks as I changed the entire room including the floors, windows and walls, and I had my own extra bits built in. It was complete just before the beauty industry was allowed to re-open.”

“The decor of my salon is very pink and girly! I’ve always been a girly girl, and I wanted to include that in my salon. The walls are all pale pink. I have a laminated grey floor and lots of pretty floral decorative details all over.

“I think pink is such a calming, feminine colour and associates well with all things beauty,” she shares. “I think it is important to have a theme and specific aesthetic running through your salon and social media, as it gives you branding and recognition to others and also shows you take pride in the appearance of your business.”

“I think my salon is unique, not only for the excessive use of the colour pink, but also for the level of comfort and intimacy it brings,” Annissa notes. “I think being in my own home helps clients feel more comfortable.

“I have made so many more friendships and bonds with clients on a personal level since being in my new salon, I think the location and calming atmosphere has a large impact on that. My clients were so excited to see my new home salon as well, which made me very happy.”

“I just love offering treatments that make people feel beautiful and confident!”

“My favourite part of my set up is my feature wall displaying all my The GelBottle colours, which is my favourite brand to use.

“The feature wall is the first thing that catches your eye as you enter,” she explains. “I painted the shelves pink, the same as the wall, to give it an almost 3D effect. I think seeing all the colours gives an instant excitement to clients.”

“I currently offer all things nails, lashes and spray tans, but my main passion is definitely nails and nail art. I think in the future I would like to expand my business into a larger area and hopefully work with more brands,” Annissa smiles. “I would love to further my skills into all areas of beauty and I am very excited for what’s to come!

“The nail and beauty community is a massive influence in my love for the industry. All over social media everyone is just so helpful and supportive of each other.”
