Kate Meara quit her full-time job in a call centre in 2016 to take the plunge into the nail industry.

“To be self employed with a few friends and family clients was terrifying at first. However, hard work and a love for the industry helped me to find my feet. I moved salon to salon for five years, making some great friends along the way, but the dream was always to open my very own beauty salon. On October 26 2021, I did just that – Base Beauty was born.”

“I have been in this premises for three years now,” she explains. “A lot can change in that time, but if I stick to my five year plan, by 2024, I will be opening salon number 2 as an academy.

“We currently boast four members of staff, including myself.”

“The building itself is in an old Victorian street, surrounded by beautiful buildings that have been there for centuries,” Kate enthuses. “This was unique in itself, and so I wanted to work with the building and compliment its history.

“I wanted to create a space that was different to anything you would expect from a beauty salon. I identified the design trends that had been done to death and steered completely away from them. Light, bright and beautiful!”

“I wanted my clients to walk into the salon and feel happy, warm and like they’re in a home away from home.”

“We offer gel polish manicures and pedicures, gel extensions, acrylic extensions, brows, lash extensions and aesthetics.

“I am a nail technician and specialise in gel nail art and design,” she shares. “I am a brand ambassador for Nails By… so I tend to use their products the most, including their gel polishes and cuticle oils.”

“For décor, I wanted anything and everything pastel,” Kate smiles. “I love a colour clash. I feel like my style of nails is a bit ‘out there’ and bold, so I wanted to capture that part of me in the salon. I often joke that the decor is like the inside of my brain.

“The décor is so crucial to the success of your business. To us girls it’s like our second home and we hope our clients feel the same way, too. Welcome to my little slice of nail heaven!”
