Widely known for its Scottish origins, plaid – also referred to as tartan – is a geometric pattern consisting of horizontal and vertical lines that overlap each other with varying degrees of transparency.
Though Scotland is thought of as the ‘birthplace’ of tartan, historians have found samples tracing back to Ancient China.
The pattern is so popular largely due to its customisable characteristics. Each vertical and horizontal line can be varied by shade, transparency and texture, while some iterations of the pattern make use of dashed lines and dots.
Christmas is typically associated with classic red tartan, however the pattern can be adapted for year-round wear.
