Rachael Beaumont, of Nails by Rachael, discusses life as a nail tech and reveals her hopes for the future of the industry and her own career.

When and why did you choose to become a nail tech?

I’d been working part time in retail but after having my son I knew that it wasn’t what I wanted to do. I wanted a career that I would love and be passionate about, and I wanted something that would fit around family life and school runs. I always had a passion for art and painting my own nails and discovered Nail Harmony in April 2015. I’ve never looked back since my training. I love my job and being able to work part time from my home salon.

What do you love about working on peoples’ nails?

I love that most of my clients are as excited as me when it comes to new products, new ideas and designs. It’s also nice catching up with them and it’s a good feeling knowing that you’ve made them feel happy and that they love their nails.

What are your favourite nail brands to work with and why?

I use a few different brands but Gelish and ProHesion are the main brands that I use and love from Nail Harmony. The company’s customer service and support is amazing and there is such a wide choice of Gelish colours. I also have quite a big collection of Magpie glitters and Glitterarty products, which I love!

What is the best piece of nail advice you’ve ever received?

There is always lots of advice being passed between nail techs. However, the advice that sticks with me is to carry on pushing yourself and never compare yourself to others, as everyone is at different levels. Just be the best that you can and focus on building yourself.

Whose nail work do you admire and why?

I could list loads, as there are so many talented techs with different skills, but I’ve always been inspired by Celina Ryden – her work is gorgeous, classy and elegant and she is such a talented artist.

What are your hopes for the future of the nail industry?

That it keeps growing from strength to strength with new products to keep us excited and great training to ensure that we can always learn something new.

What are your future career ambitions?

This year I want to complete more nail art and technical courses to improve my skills. I’m constantly pushing myself to do more and improve to be the best I can be. My future goal is to become an educator so that I can teach, advise and support others. Even now I try and help fellow nail techs if they ask me for advice, as I love to help them out where I can.
