If you have been a regular reader of Scratch magazine for some time, you will probably have seen a series of articles called The Force of the Feds, written by the directors of The Federation of Nail Professionals (The FNP). So who are we, what do we do and why should you be interested?

The FNP was the idea of nail industry aficionado, Marian Newman BEM. Before lockdown, her vision was to create an organisation dedicated to raising the standards of the nail industry, to be an independent voice for nail technicians and to provide technical and business advice.

Alongside fellow directors: Liza Smith, Samantha Sweet, Clare Woodcock and myself, Denise Spragg, Marian has been able to bring that vision into being, and we are here to serve and speak up for you. We are also working at the highest level to campaign for proper recognition of the industry and give you confidence in your skills. Having been in salons for many years, we know first-hand that technicians have a huge amount of skill, taking hours of practice and trying something again and again until you get it right.

So, what’s in it for me, you may ask?  Well, The FNP website is fast becoming an invaluable resource for both technical and business advice. It is split into two sections: the free section which anyone can browse to find help, and the paid members’ area. This contains technical and scientific content, business advice, guidance on how to improve your mindset around your business, health & safety and diversity and inclusivity tutorials.  Our Facebook groups have a wide variety of interesting and inspirational posts together with discussion threads, and we go live with our various Federation experts. As well as this, the directors (we call ourselves ‘The Feds’) have a series of webinars scheduled for the rest of the year on their particular areas of expertise, and with almost 140 years’ experience between us, you can be confident that we’ve been there, seen it and done it all!

We would love for you to join us, on one of our two levels – as a supporter, which costs nothing, or as a professional. The professional membership is £50 per year or £27 for six months, but the value you will receive encompasses confidence, enthusiasm, a voice for your concerns and a safe space to ask advice, share your successes and even help you should you want to enter nail competitions.
