How to create a Pennywise clown nail for Halloween

Step by Step

Session nail stylist, salon owner & educator, Marie-Louise Coster, shares how to create Pennywise the clown from Stephen King’s It on nails, using Artistic Nail Design. She used the following Artistic Colour Gloss shades: Bride, Swag, Hotzy, How Do Hue Do? and Wild, available in the UK via Louella Belle.

Step 1
Paint the whole nail with Bride and cure.
Step 2
Apply two coats of Artistic Glossing Gel Top Coat, curing each layer. Remove the inhibition layer and buff, creating a matte surface to sketch the art on.
Step 3
Using a fine, sharp pencil, draw Pennywise onto the nail.
Step 4
Once you are happy with your sketch, define the outline of the face, the eyebrow, the sunken black eye and the collar detail using Swag and a fine liner brush. Small amounts of this shade can also be used to add shade and definition to the facial features. Cure. Using Hotzy, paint the nose and the stripe down the face to the mouth. Cure.
Step 5
Use How Do Hue Do? to paint the hair, and Wild for the yellow eye and tooth detail. Cure.
Step 6
Using Swag, create the pupil of the eye and add depth in the mouth, definition to the nose and texture to the hair. Cure.
Step 7
Apply two coats of Glossing Gel, cure each layer, remove the inhibition layer and gently buff to create a matte finish. Alternatively, you can leave the finish glossy.
