Step by Step

With the hype surrounding 2023’s Wonka film starring Timothée Chalamet and thus ‘chocolate core’ among the terminology that has seen an increase in Google searches (as reported by Wethrift), The World’s Star Nail Artist 2023, Katy Pottle, shares how she fashioned the iconic Wonka Bar on nails.

All products used are from Magpie Beauty, available via www.magpiebeauty.co.uk:

  • Prep & Dehydrate Fluid.
  • Gel Paint in Brown, Red, Black and White.
  • Chrome Dusts in Madonna, Bridie and Elizabeth.
  • Give Me Strength in Clear.
  • Nail Striper Brush.
  • 240-grit buffer.
  • Silicone Tool.
  • Duster Brush in Soft.
  • Like A Diamond Top Coat.
  • Velvet Top Coat.
  • Cleanser.
  • Lint-free wipes.
Step 1
Using Brown Gel Paint, create a filled semicircle at the free edge of the nail, depicting the open end of the chocolate bar, and paint a horizontal line near the cuticle. Cure.
Step 2
Map out the pieces of chocolate using a dark brown shade (created by mixing Brown and Black Gel Paints) and Nail Striper Brush, then cure to avoid smudging. Paint the wrapper shape using Red Gel Paint and cure.
Step 3
Within this step, you can do as little or as much shading as you like, but the main shading that will add depth is on the middle squares. Using a light brown shade (created by mixing Brown and White Gel Paints), paint lines horizontally in between the squares and at the vertical edges of each. In the left side of each square, paint an 'L' shape using the light brown mix. Use the dark brown mix to paint an upside down 'L' joined to each light brown shape, creating rectangles. Cure, then apply a coat of Give Me Strength in Clear and cure.
Step 4
Buff the entire nail with a 240-grit buffer and wipe with Prep & Dehydrate Fluid. Using Black Gel Paint, paint over the red wrapper shape and cure.
Step 5
Using the Silicone Tool, apply Chrome Dust in Madonna over the black, and dust off with the Duster Brush in Soft.
Step 6
Use the White Gel Paint and Nail Striper Brush to create the Wonka lettering, only painting part of 'WONKA' to give the illusion of an open chocolate bar. Cure. If you are not confident about painting on top of chrome, encapsulate with Clear Give Me Strength first. If you do this, you will need to buff the nail and wipe again with Prep & Dehydrate Fluid.
Step 7
Apply Chrome Dust in Bridie to the writing using the Silicone Tool. Paint the top hat and B of 'BAR’ that features on the wrapper using Black Gel Paint. Cure, then apply Chrome Dust in Elizabeth and dust off with the Duster Brush in Soft.
Step 8
Using Give Me Strength in Clear, adhere small pieces of tin foil along the line of the wrapper shape and cure. Make sure the foil is as flat as possible.
Step 9
Encapsulate the entire design using Clear Give Me Strength. From the foil down, apply Like A Diamond Top Coat, and use Velvet Top Coat for the chocolate part of the look, curing in between. Wipe the tacky layer with Cleanser.
