Seasonal & Occasions, Step by Step

You’re a mean one, Mr Grinch! Freehand nail artist, Gemma Dawson, has created this Grinch-inspired nail design, perfect for the festive season.

Step 1
Start with a light green tip and top coat it with a no wipe top coat.
Step 2
Using a dark green or black gel paint, add a small mushroom shape in the centre and draw a vertical line down from it.
Step 3
Next you want to add a lopsided semicircle at the bottom of the vertical line.
Step 4
Then paint a line across that will become his pouting lip. Cure.
Step 5
Directly above each side of his nose, add two curved lines in dark green.
Step 6
Add two black lines that curve in the opposite direction and meet in the middle. These will become his eyebrows.
Step 7
Bring the black lines under and join them up to make two eye shapes. Cure.
Step 8
Leave a gap and paint four semi circles above the brows.
Step 9
Use where the circles end as a guide to join up the outline of his head shape, and bring his chin into a point.
Step 10
Whilst the gel is still wet use a thicker brush to drag out the edges, this will give the impression of fur. Cure.
Step 11
Paint in his eyes with white and his nose dark green. Also run a line of dark green under his lip. Cure.
Step 12
Paint his lip pink and cure.
Step 13
Start filling in the eyebrows with black and the head area with dark green. Use the thicker brush again and drag the paint to give a furry finish. Cure.
Step 14
Using the same dragging technique paint the rest of his face apart from the section around his nose with a green a few shades lighter. Cure.
Step 15
Add more dark green, layering and dragging to make him look furrier.
Step 16
Run some green mixed with topcoat on the underside of his eyes. This will give us a nice shadow. Cure.
Step 17
Add some finer lines of dark green or black to outline his fur. Also add some black to his nostrils and cure. Add his irises, using a bright mid tone green. Cure.
Step 18
Outline his irises in black and add pupils. Also using a fine liner add some thin black lines to his brows to give definition and also make them look bushier. Cure. Blacken around his eyes, his brows and add any additional fur layering at this point. Cure.
Step 19
Using a fine liner run a few thin lines of pale green through his brows and on the top of his nose to act as a highlight. Cure.
Step 20
Topcoat and cure to finish.
