Salon Services has released its seventh annual Beautiful Britain Report, revealing that the hair and beauty industry is set to add almost 50,000 jobs to the UK economy.

The survey, which quizzed 2,500 UK hair and beauty pros and 2,000 consumers across November and December 2016, found that 99% of salons and barbershops plan to increase or maintain headcount over the next 12 months, equating to 16,738 new roles. Additionally, 58% of hair and beauty businesses plan to hire at least one apprentice this year.

A huge 86% of hair and beauty professionals think that 2016 was a good year for their business, which constitutes a 10% rise from last year’s Beautiful Britain Report, and 64% of businesses feel more confident about the year ahead than they did 12 months ago.

The report also found that the frequency in nail treatments has risen slightly since the 2016 Beautiful Britain Report. This, combined with price rises, means that women now spend an average of £252 per year on nail treatments, up 12% on 2015.

For women, the average cost of manicure has risen from £17 to £18, while the average cost of a pedicure has increased from £19 to £21.

Manicures are most popular with ladies in Yorkshire & Humber, who on average leave just 3.1 weeks between treatments.

“Professionals around the UK have done an incredible job in broadening their offerings to appeal to both male and female customers,” comments Warren Scarr, MD & group VP of Sally Salon Services UK and Ireland.

“I’m proud to be a part of an industry that is set to contribute so positively to the country’s economy and which, through hard work and dedication, has created a future to be optimistic about. Professionals in our sector are not only passionate about giving customers the best possible experience, they are committed to nurturing the next generation of talent through rewarding apprenticeship opportunities.

“Overall this is a fantastic time for hair and beauty professionals to be joining or working in the industry, and based on this year’s Beautiful Britain findings there is much to be excited about for the year ahead.”
