A terminally ill six-year-old has raised over €2.5m for fellow sick children through a nail painting dare.

Dutch native, Tijn Kolsteren, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in May, took inspiration from the ice bucket challenge to dare people – particularly men – to paint their nails and donate to charities to support children suffering from the likes of pneumonia.

Those taking part are then encouraged to dare three people to do the same and post pictures of their nails on social media with the hashtag #lakaan, which means ‘the polish is on’.

Tijn initially hoped to raise a few hundred Euros, but the campaign saw support from some of The Netherlands’ most famous DJs, including Armin van Buuren, as well as video blogger Enzo Knol and the Dutch prime minister, Mark Rutte.

The appeal is part of a traditional event in country in which radio DJs go for several days without food or drink to raise money, and this year, proceeds are going to the Red Cross.
