Le Chat Opening Ceremony

Quirky fashion label, Opening Ceremony, stormed the NYFW runway to showcase its spring/summer 18 collection – in a very unusual setup.

The brand put together a dance piece with performances throughout the week, for which Le Chat’s lead nail artist, Naomi Yasuda, create three styles using Dare to Wear nail lacquer.

Naomi was inspired by Mia Waskikowska, the main dancer, whose character shifts from soft and feminine to strong and powerful throughout the performance. “For Mia I wanted to be able to showcase both her femininity and strength with nail art,” Naomi comments.

The nail artist used LeChat Dare to Wear in Precious Ice paired with a crisscross design of bold, strong lines to represent her strength. She used LeChat Dare to Wear in Black Velvet as a base.

For the supporting dancer, Naomi used LeChat Dare to Wear Mood Polish, a formula that shifts colours based on body temperature. Naomi selected, Timeless Ruby, which paints on as a dark red, but as the performer begins to dance and her body temperature rises, the colour shifts to a bright red.

“I also added black lines with LeChat Dare to Wear Black Velvet, but with a pattern that I felt danced across her fingers,” Naomi adds. “This look is much stronger and matched her wardrobe in the performance.”

The third and final look created was for the two backup dancers and featured a small black and white checked design on the tips of their nails using LeChat Dare to Wear in Black Velvet and Flawless White.

Naomi said, “I chose these colours because they are not primary colours but are neutral. The checker on the tip supports the nail and gives it character without taking over.”
