Making people happy is the best part of the job for hair and beauty professionals, according to new research released by Direct Line for Business.

The report also found that more than a quarter of hair and beauty professionals kick-started their career as a Saturday worker, and that 50% of pros followed a family member into their chosen field.

Meeting new people and creating inspiring styles were also listed as the best things about working in the hair and beauty realm, and the report detailed that apprenticeships and college courses are the most popular choices ways for people to get their foothold in the industry.

While learning the trade, hair and beauty lovers use their friends and family as models, with one in six practicing their rudimentary skills on their nearest and dearest.

“It’s interesting to see that so many people start out in the hair and beauty industry with a Saturday job to earn some extra money, but end up enjoying it so much they turn it into a career,” comments Jane Guaschi, business manager at Direct Line for Business.  “There are so many different opportunities for young people and it is often hard for them to know what they enjoy and where their skill set lies. Being able to try a job beforehand is truly the best way to know whether it’s suited.

“This sector also offers so many pathways to success so whether you own your business and employ others to work in a salon or work as a freelancer, it’s important to have the right insurance to cover your business as it grows.”
