‘Very Peri’, a periwinkle blue hue with a violet red undertone, has been unveiled as the Pantone Color of the Year for 2022.

The global colour authority has picked the shade (PANTONE 17-3938) as ‘ symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through’.

Pantone provides the universal ‘language of colour’ that enables colour-critical decisions to be made by brands and manufacturers. The Color of the Year has been announced every year for 23 years, and Pantone’s colour experts look all over the world for colour influences, including in the entertainment industry, art collections, fashion, popular travel destinations and areas of design, to make their pick.

The shade selection influences product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion and beauty.

“Suggestive of personal inventiveness and daring imagination, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri makes a novel statement for eyes, nails and especially in hair in a variety of finishes and applications from glittery and glam to dusty matte.”

Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, comments: “The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that colour can hope to answer.

“Creating a new colour for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational colour programme reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place.

“As society continues to recognise colour as a critical form of communication and as a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red-violet-infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lie before us.”
