Tina Bell, head of education & support at Pure Nails, shares her views on the key nail trends for spring/summer 2021…

After the perils of then pandemic, we are all longing for some amazing nails and a good pamper session! Eye-catching gel polish shades and distinctive nail artistry can be real conversation starters and get people talking, so start practicing your nail art skills, updating your gel collection with the latest seasonal colours, and making sure you’re ahead of the competition. My salon team uses any free time to practice and get creative.

Here are my views on the top 10 nail trends for the season ahead:

1.With three lockdowns now done and dusted, there has been a definite shift in nail shapes from long nails to shorter, more natural, and lower maintenance nails. I expect to see this continue into 2022.

2.For those that love enhancements and super long nails, we will be seeing less of the almond and coffin nail shapes of 2020 and more edgy, square styles. Think ballerina nails, squoval or straight-up square for modern look.

3.The metallic trend will stay with us this year, especially when created with a matte finish, glitter acrylic powders and loose glitter – for everything from a shimmer to high shine.

4.Halo Gel Polish colours in Bubblegum Pink, Flamingo and Neon Coral are set to be huge this year- better still if matched with pink lipstick! The brighter the better for summer 2021.

5.Emerald Green and Army Green will remain popular colours, especially when combined with a graduated glitter or contrasting metallic like Copper or Rose Gold.

6.Vibrant shades of blue, ranging from Baby Blue to Royal Blue and all the pastels in between will be strong this year. Why not add a blue glitter or a contrasting colour to really make them pop?

7.I’m positive that matching nails to face masks will continue – and grow in popularity.

8.Natural shades of nude from beige to barely-there pinks or classic French tips over Clear offers a chic look. Negative space, florals and butterflies over nude shades or Clear gel will also be another big trend for spring/summer 2021. You could use nail foils for a fun addition.

9.Dark brown shades will be around for longer, especially when combined with tortoise shell or animal prints. But when isn’t animal print in fashion? We all love a touch of leopard or tiger print!

10.Quirky takes on the classic French nail will also be continuing well into the year; coloured tips, baby boomers and glitter fades will be most popular. French is coming back in a big way this year so start practicing your skills! Add a bit of lace or a design over them to really make them stand out.
