Scratch chats to Stephanie Holland of Nailin Itt about qualifying as a nail tech during the lockdown and her next career steps…

Initially, I started doing nails as a hobby during the first lockdown. It became evident that I had a natural flair for creating nails and especially nail art.

I feel like doing nails is a way I can channel my creative energy and I am a sociable and outgoing person – so what better job than being a nail technician, where I can get to build relationships with my amazing clients, who all seem to come back… So I must be doing something right!

I feel privileged when I see my designs being used as inspiration for other nails techs, which makes me want to push myself more and more.

During the lockdown, I had to use my own hands to create content and try out different designs and products, so the majority of the time I had one had one hand with long, arty, acrylic nails and the other plain and natural. However, I typically love to wear builder gel and bright nail art design as I am an eccentric individual.

I recently started working at an amazing salon full time, which is a big leap for me and I feel extremely proud of myself for taking that step.

I’m still learning, and I will continue to do so for the rest of my career – I feel like there is a big market for nail academies and that will be my next big step within the nail industry.

I trained to do acrylic nails through an online nail course as it was in lockdown. I felt I had to figure out what I was doing on my own once qualifying. I struggled to find any support for myself as a beginner nail tech. At the time, I wish there had been more accessible support for beginner nail techs. This is why I feel driven to teach and support new up and coming nail technicians in the future.

Before doing nails, I was working full time in administration and recruitment. Lockdown was a blessing in disguise as it helped me find my passion for doing nails and creating nail art.

I didn’t think twice when it came to making the decision to go full time as a nail technician – so far it’s been the best experience and I am loving it.
