Tasmin Russell of Nails By Tazzy chats to Scratch about her next career steps and keeping up with nail trends…

“I did my training with the company I work for now, Lux Beauty Training Academy,” Tasmin reveals. “My training was what set me off on the right track. Charlotte and Chantelle were so lovely and supportive throughout, no question was too big or too small.

“I’d never even picked up an acrylic brush before then, and they were so patient and took their time giving 1-1 demonstrations and guidance. I left feeling so much more confident than I went in and just itching to get started!”

“I love to create anything colourful and whacky. My favourite designs are gel designs whether over acrylic, gel extensions or builder gel.

“I love acrylic designs too, but I definitely thrive more doing hand painted gel designs,” she shares. “My favourite thing at the minute is animal print and neon colours, the brighter the better!”

“Mostly all my inspiration comes from Instagram,” Tasmin smiles. “The talent from nail techs all across the world is crazy and I love seeing what they create.

“Some of my favourite nail creations come from MUA Hannah Taylor, Gels By Bry, Nails By Chantelle and Nails By Natasha Paige.”

I could honestly get lost in nails on Instagram – it’s incredible!”

“My next steps for the future is to become an educator under Lux Beauty Training Academy,” she enthuses. “I’ll be spending the next few months with Charlotte, training to lead classes to teach aspiring new nail techs and to help further people’s skills, offering 1-1 sessions too.

“I’m very excited for this move as I’ve been assisting with the training for a little while now and have loved every minute of it, I want to help send nail technicians out with the best support and guidance, as I was.”

“I think the best advice I’ve ever been given is to not get to concerned about Instagram likes and followers,” Tasmin reflects. “It’s so nice to get that recognition and attention, but when you start getting caught up in it, it’s really hard to not get upset and start comparing yourself to others.

“Just take your time focus on creating fun designs and those things will come naturally.”

“I love being part of a tight knit group of girls that only want the best for each other, I didn’t expect the beauty industry to be like this at all.

“All the support I see day in day out is unreal – both on Instagram and in our salon – and it’s wonderful to be a part of,” she beams. “I also love sending my clients away with that feeling you get when you’ve just had your nails done, we all know the one!”

“There really is nothing like seeing a client walk out buzzing, it’s definitely my favourite part of being a tech.”

“It’s important when you’re learning to take your time and not get too frustrated when you’re not picking things up as easy as you’d like,” Tasmin explains. “Practice makes perfect so just keep at it and you’ll get there!

“Don’t put too much pressure on yourself because it doesn’t look like someone else’s work, because it’s not it’s yours and you should be proud of what you’ve created.”

“Nails have become a sort of fashion, which means the trends are forever changing. What might be popular now will probably not be popular in a years time, so I think it’s important to keep yourself on your toes learn new things always regardless of how long you’ve been in the industry.

“I love learning new things and practicing to perfect them it’s what keeps me on my toes and saves me from getting bored of doing the same things,” she comments. “Being in the nail industry is good for me because I don’t get chance to be bored, every day there’s a new skill to be learning – I absolutely love it!”
