Scratch chats to Laura Katy Chester of LK Beauty about how she created this striking monochrome nail design. She also shares the small moments that make her proud of her career….

I qualified as a nail technician back in 2016 with Young Nails. After a couple of years in a salon, I started to work from home. During the first lockdown in 2020, I decided to spend most of my time practising on my own nails, developing my techniques and growing my Instagram. I’ve always had a passion for nails and I’m so inspired by all the amazing nail techs out there, and can’t wait to keep progressing.

I love experimenting with different nail art styles. However, I would say my all time favourite is the French style nail. I find it so classy and personally, I would never get bored of doing a French nail and the various styles you can create with it. The glitter, colour, deep, thin, chevron, ombré – you name it, I love it! There’s so many different ways you can achieve a complete French nail.

The Gel Bottle has a few of my favourite products, the most notable being Builder Gels and colourful gel polishes. Builder in a Bottle has been such an amazing product, and has fully converted both me and my clients from L&P acrylic enhancements. The nail growth and strength that can be achieved is amazing! I also use Magpie Beauty Glitters as they are beautifully pigmented. Glitter Arty Nails have some amazing pigments and nail art shapes that I love to use. Another is the BrillBirdUK Brush & Go Gels, they are amazing for nail art and are so easy to work with and very pigmented!

How to:

To create this set of nails I used The Gel Bottle’s Builder in a Bottle in Teddy over my natural nail and then applied a thin layer of the Clear Builder in a Bottle to stick the diamonds and glitter to the centre of the nail. Once I was happy with this, I then hand painted the white lines down each side. The diamonds and glitter were from Glitter Arty Nails.

The thing I love the most about the nail industry is the amount of support that there is online.

I’ve met some amazing nail techs through Instagram who have helped me in so many ways. I’m also so grateful for all of my clients and absolutely love being able to do their nails for them.

Hitting 1000 followers was a massive achievement for me. Personally, I don’t think there has been solely one moment that has stood out as being the highlight of my career, but instead, there are so many small moments that has made me proud of what I do. Simply being recognised by other well established nail technicians and nail companies on Instagram such as The Gel Bottle gives me the confidence to grow further.

My hopes for my future in nails are to keep growing my business and to be able to inspire other nail technicians.

I hope to be able to continue to keep my clientele happy and always make my family proud. I currently work from home so I would love to move into a bigger premises one day.
