SALON IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Venus Beauty & Hair, Tavistock, Devon

Tranquil and professional with its green and purple colour scheme, Venus Beauty & Hair was ten years in the making for owner, Kirsty Douglas. “I started Venus back in 2007,“ Kirsty reveals. “At the time, I was home based and working part time. As my business grew I rented spaces in salons while growing my client base and learning more skills. In 2014 I found an ideal property and started the process of opening my own salon, from there Venus Beauty and Hair became established.

“In 2015, I joined forces with my business partner, John Worrall, and Venus went from solely beauty to beauty and hair. Since then we’ve been able to go from working independently and renting spaces to having our own three-storey property. This has meant we have been able to take on more staff – from hair stylists to beauty therapists – and last year saw us add a sun shower unit to the salon.

With currently seven members of staff, the salon covers all beauty bases for its clients. “Our mantra is to we have you covered from top-to-toe,” Kirsty enthuses. “You can get all your treatments done under one roof from nails to waxing, spray tans to hair styling. We have it all.

“We also have a chill out room for those having long treatments or for clients who just want an extra ten minutes or so. Squidgy sofas with blankets, cushions and magazines to make a space that is completely theirs.”

Nail treatments have remained at the heart of Kristy’s treatment menu. “We have a varied treatment range but I do manicures, including Gelish and acrylics, pedicures, eyelash extensions, massage, facials, tinting, waxing and Hopi ear candling.

“I specialise in nails and eyelash extensions. Nails was where my career started and I love everything that comes with it and continuing to learn new skills. I also love the fiddly, in depth concentration that eyelash extensions brings.”

Reflecting this professionality is the salon’s décor. “We wanted to create a calm and welcoming environment for the salon so we have a lot of neutrals with an added splash of colour. Venus Beauty and Hair’s colour scheme is purple and green so the hair salon has a feature wall in green. As it’s such a light and big space we knew this colour would work well.

“Our clients often mention how relaxing the salon is and we’d like to think our décor has helped this. It isn’t too empowering but gives a tranquil setting for our clients to switch off from the outside world for the duration of their treatments.”
