As we mourn the loss of singer-songwriter, actress & philanthropist, Dolly Parton, we can’t help but remember her not only for her beautiful approach to life, incredible music career and beaming smile – but for her extravagant nails, which became synonymous with her vivacious personality.

We’ve rounded up five fun facts about Dolly’s iconic nails that you may not know…

1. Dolly’s nails have an official music credit.

When writing the theme song for the 1980 film, 9 to 5, Dolly needed a rhythmic beat to help spark her creative flow. Without her guitar on set, she turned to an unexpected instrument: her famously long acrylic nails.

Dolly rubbed her nails together to create a distinctive percussive rhythm, which was ultimately incorporated into the final recording of the hit song. And in a wonderfully Dolly-esque detail, the album credits acknowledge the nail metronome with the line, ‘Nails by Dolly’.

2. Her style was inspired by a local.

Dolly’s classic red lip and long nails were inspired by an extravagantly-styled woman from her Tennessee hometown. In an interview with The Guardian, Dolly said: “I just thought she was beautiful […] When people would say, ‘She ain’t nothing but trash‘, I would always say, ‘Well, that’s what I’m gonna be when I grow up‘.”

3. She adjusted her guitar technique to work around her nails.

If you’ve played a guitar before, or even seen one up-close, you’ll know how fiddly playing the stringed instrument can be. Add two or more inches of acrylic nails into the mix and you’ve got one tricky task on your hands.

But Dolly wasn’t about to sacrifice one passion for the other. Instead, she found a way to make her love of long nails work alongside her love of the guitar, adapting the way she played to accommodate her signature manicure.

Rather than relying on intricate finger-picking techniques and complex chords, Dolly used open tunings, meaning she didn’t have to curl her fingers into tight, complicated shapes. She also adopted a modified finger angle, allowing her to play without pressing directly down onto the strings and risking damage to her nails.

The technique not only helped protect her manicure, but meant she was less likely to accidentally catch the fretboard or strike neighbouring strings – proving that for Dolly, there was always a way to have the best of both worlds.

4. She chose long nails to ‘elongate’ her fingers.

Dolly was often known to discuss the reasoning behind her choice of long acrylic nails. The singer famously joked in an interview with Allure: “I’ve got little short, stubby hands, so of course I’m going to have long nails; I’m short, so I wear high heels, and my hair don’t do what I want it to, so I wear wigs.

“I never could grow my nails,” she continued. “So, when they started coming out with those acrylic nails, I was first on.”

Dolly’s long nails ultimately became an integral part of her signature look, simply because she loved the way they looked. Like her beehive wigs, sky-high heels and sparkling outfits, they were another expression of her personality – and a beauty choice she had no intention of giving up.

5. Dolly’s nails were proof that style doesn’t have to stop productivity.

Anyone with long nails will know the frustration of being asked: ‘How do you get anything done with those nails?‘. And even Dolly Parton couldn’t escape the question.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, the host posed the infamous question to Dolly. Rather than simply laughing it off, the singer decided to demonstrate exactly how she managed to balance her glamorous manicure with her musical talents.

Live on television, Dolly picked up her guitar and effortlessly struck a perfect chord without catching any of the neighbouring strings. In just a few seconds, she showed that her long nails were no obstacle to her playing – this simply required a little technique and adaptation.

For Dolly, beauty and practicality were never mutually exclusive. If anything, her long nails served as a reminder that getting the job done doesn’t have to come at the cost of personal style.
