The French tip is a nail design that transcends seasons, however if you’re looking for summer-specific ways to add seasonal flair to the classic style – and expert advice on perfecting your application technique, keep reading…

“The French tip has remained a staple in the nail industry for decades because of its timeless versatility,” says Jake Wilde, Scratch Stars Builder Gel Tech of the Year finalist 2026. “Its clean, polished appearance complements every occasion – from everyday wear and professional settings to weddings and special events. Unlike trend-driven nail designs that come and go, a French tip offers a classic look that never feels out of style.”
Jake advises: “Let the natural shape of the nail guide the smile line. Every nail is different, so a one-size-fits-all approach simply doesn’t work.”

“Keep your smile lines even by creating a straight, horizontal guideline. Then, working from the centre of the nail, gently pull the product down along each side to create a smooth, even curve,” shares fellow Scratch Stars Builder Gel Tech of the Year finalist 2026, Georgina Watt.
She continues: “My top tip for creating the perfect French tip is to use a thicker viscosity white gel for better control and coverage.”

Lucy Price, Scratch Stars Builder Gel Tech of the Year 2026, agrees, saying: “Select a highly pigmented colour for your French tip – whether you prefer classic white, natural, milky or a pop of colour.”
She adds: “Use a liner brush to create a sharp smile line, and apply in the same way on each nail for a consistent finish. Ensure the entirety of your liner brush is coated. I prefer a medium-length brush for longer and smoother lines.”

“It’s key to have a conversation with your client about the look they’re hoping to achieve, as not every French tip is the same,” shares Michaela Phillips, Scratch Stars Builder Gel Tech of the Year finalist 2026. “Some people love a deep, dramatic smile line, while others prefer a softer, more natural look.
“My biggest tip for perfecting your technique is practice. While French tips used to be a design I dreaded doing, the more I practiced, the more confident I became,” she continues. “Like many techniques in nails, consistency comes with repetition.”
