The first four months of 2022 has seen significant growth in sales of prestige fragrance, lip products and skincare, according to a report by global market research company, The NPD Group. The report reveals changes in consumer habits, comparing stats from Jan-April 2022 with the same period in 2019.

Fragrance

Fragrance products have seen the largest amount of sales, totalling a whopping £263 million – a 6% increase from 2019 – credited to the introduction of larger sizes and stronger concentrations of fragrance products, combined with the growth of niche brands.

Emma Fishwick, account manager for NPD UK Beauty, comments: “Consumers continue their love affair with fragrance, and this remains the key driver of the prestige beauty market.”

Lip products

Sales of lip make-up products have declined by 20%. The NPD Group notes the changing trends within lip products, with consumers leaning towards lip gloss, which has seen a 20% increase in sales, and lip balm, with sales increasing by 61%.

Trends have seen consumers favouring moisturising and plumping products over traditional lip make-up products, with Emma Fishwick noting: “It is interesting to see the new stars emerging as consumers opt for lip products with benefits to hydrate and protect their lips.”

Skincare

Skincare remains popular in the first quarter of 2022, with unit sales increasing by 15%, a trend that began to emerge during the pandemic. Face supplements and serums are emerging as the newest skincare trends, with supplements seeing a 73% increase in sales, and sales of serums increasing by a staggering 80%.

Skincare for the face isn’t the only area that has boomed – sales of body devices have increased by  512%, and sales of body supplements has increased by 196%. On these developing trends, Emma Fishwick notes: “Skincare continues to be a popular part of consumer’s beauty regimes, especially with the growth of face and body supplements.”
