Co-founded by salon owner and stylist, Susanne Shepard Post, the Shear Haven initiative holds a close tie to Susanne as a survivor of domestic violence herself, securing her commitment to educating the beauty community on the signs of abuse. The initiative has seen a range of successes since its 2021 launch. Susanne appeared on Haircuts4Homeless founder, Stewart Robert MBE’s Hear Me, See Me podcast, alongside Shear Haven UK and Ireland ambassador, Liz McKeon.

Other achievements include its partnership with Dermalogica (UK&I) in 2022, seeing Shear Haven working alongside the brand to ensure that skin therapists are taught to appropriately respond to the signs of domestic violence. The Shear Haven team worked to launch a website to reach a wider audience and communicate its story, presenting tools and resources in one location.

Shear Haven and Susanne’s US-based endeavours include:

  • Susanne & partners from YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee travelled to Washington, D.C. to meet with members from Congress to discuss the Shear Haven initiative.
  • The State of Tennessee passed a law requiring all licensed beauty professionals to learn the signs of domestic abuse & how to respond.
  • Susanne was recognised with a Purple Ribbon Award & the Survivor of the Year from the Nashville Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Shear Haven UK and Ireland ambassador, Liz McKeon comments: “I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the amazing industry professionals who have supported this life saving initiative.  I want to acknowledge the many business owners who have encouraged their teams to download the training, helping to increase awareness about the important role stylists and therapists play in clients’ lives.

“I want to say a very special thank you to Dermalogica for becoming official partners and to all our media friends who have been beyond generous in promoting Shear Haven.”

Co-founder, Susanne Shepherd Post, comments: “We have been overwhelmed by the response to our Shear Haven initiative within and outside the beauty industry. Domestic violence impacts countless lives, and this training provides the tools many of us didn’t even know we needed.

“We must keep having this conversation and providing the resources the empower practitioners to respond appropriately. We look forward to continuing and building partnerships with the beauty industry and those in places of power to change laws that will ultimately, help save lives.”
