Take a trip down memory lane at our previous winners with their words of wisdom...

Untitled Design

2021 Winner - Lucy Allen

With an image so striking, Sheffield-based Lucy Allen scooped first place in the competition in 2021 and her image was even chosen to feature on a Scratch cover.

"The concept for the shoot was Afrofuturism. The team and I wanted to create a look that reflected a brighter future influenced by science, technology and specifically black culture and futuristic iconography.

"Choose your creative team and your models wisely and well in advance. You need to be on the same page creatively and be able to effectively communicate your ideas between each other to get the best out of your shoot."

2020 Winner - Ivana Prokic

Scooping first place in the competition for the second time, Ivana Prokic’s winning entry combines a flawlessly executed shot with a stunning personal story in line with 2020's competition theme: 'You'.

"I interpreted the theme by sharing my own life experience,” Ivana explains. “As a child I struggled: I felt like I did not belong anywhere. My parents immigrated to Sweden over 40 years ago and I was bullied for my foreign name.

“I also struggled with dyslexia. Teachers told me that I would never become anything.

“Now, I have found myself. I’m not going to be a victim. I want to be positive and see the positive things in life and be thankful for that.”

Shoot Out Nina Lewis

2019 Winner - Nina Lewis

Captivating with its sleek and subtle nail look and striking use of props, London-based Nina Lewis scooped first place in the competition last year.

"You should enter photographic competitions for the experience, to learn to take criticism, learn from your mistakes and analyse what you could have done better.

"Believe in yourself, trust your judgement and do not feel you need to conform or be influenced to what others may think is right.

"Stretch yourself and try to exceed your limitations!"
