Sarah Brenton-Sara, lecturer in Level 2 & 3 Nail Services & Beauty Therapy at Truro & Penwith College, reveals how her students have been learning & developing their skills during lockdown…

It has been a turbulent year for the nail industry, however my part-time nail students have excellent throughout lockdown and created some amazing nails for a competition online.

The theme was sustainability, and the students came up with such creative ideas.

Sophie Lumley feels strongly about the animals so created icebergs and how they are affected in the environment, her polar bears were so realistic.

Natalie Kellow used her daughter as her model and created a beach theme with a treasure trunk to hold the moodboard ideas. She spent many nights making this masterpiece.

Katie Weeks developed nail art into miniature items from the garden and made a bird feeder with a bird eating from it. There was great attention to detail in this design.

First place was awarded to Amy Osborne for her adaption of old furniture, books and crockery as she believes that recycling is the way forward. Amy showcased her nail creation via video and it revealed how she had used furniture to play as her moodboard which was so effective.

Support is ongoing for the students, as well as previous students who I still keep in touch with in order to help them with their nail business. I am available to them for additional demonstrations and answering of questions they may have.

Lockdown has adapted our teaching techniques and we have worked well remotely. What’s more, the students have access to training online as and when they need it via our platforms. We’re also doing regular quizzes to keep students engaged.
