Sundays Meditative Manicure

Founder of Sundays Studio, Amy Ling Lin, was inspired by former clients and salon experiences to create a nail space that promotes safety, self-care and inclusivity for both clients and nail specialists.

With a focus on wellness for its nail services and product offerings, Sundays Studio offers clients and staff ‘a quiet oasis of relaxation’ away from the bustle of New York City.

The salon offers a range of nail treatments with wellness-inspired twists; such as its meditative manicure services, combining meditation concepts with the traditional manicure. “One way to improve your wellbeing is meditating, slowing down and being present with yourself, and this is the idea behind our meditative manicure,” says Amy Ling Lin.

“The meditative manicure incorporates meditation into nailcare because we believe that they go hand in hand. Other things we offer in our studio include love letter writing to yourself, affirmation cards and a mindful tea bar to help clients relax, feel good and look good.

“The wellness-inspired services at Sundays Studio were inspired by former clients. I remember trying to strike conversation with clients many years ago, offering them magazines and other forms of entertainment during their service. However, I realised that they needed a moment to themselves.

“I wanted to create a salon environment that prioritises the health & safety of nail specialists,” Amy continues. “I once witnessed a client threaten to slap a nail specialist when she couldn’t find her requested nail colour, because she didn’t speak English. It stuck with me and planted the seed for what would later become Sundays Studio.”

Amy was inspired to introduce her own line of nail polishes to Sundays Studio, prioritising the ingredients during its formulation. She also opted to intentionally label her polishes by number instead of name to prevent staff potentially facing criticism for their English speaking abilities.

“I’m very proud of working with immigrants at Sundays Studio, being an immigrant myself, and I always strive to improve the wellbeing of my nail specialists in the workplace,” Amy says.

“Sundays Studio is founded on the belief that no one should have to sacrifice health for beauty, and everyone is beautiful in their individual way – and this includes my nail specialists! I encourage my staff to pride themselves in their work and feel confident about their working environment. It’s also why I ask staff to be hand models for Sundays product and service photoshoots!

“We train our specialists to work as a team and have a full support system in place for busier times, such as weekends.

“I want everyone to believe and be inspired that they are good enough on a daily basis,” Amy smiles. “Having self-worth is so important in growing as an individual. It doesn’t matter what stage you are in life, people always question themselves. For nail specialists, it’s very easy to doubt one’s abilities and self-worth in the process of trying to please a client. It has been my aim to promote a supportive and stress-free work environment to enhance the self-care of my nail specialists.

“All staff wear name tags and are introduced by name to clients. During appointments, clients and nail specialists are seated at the same level to eliminate any hierarchy of staff or client. I want to make the nail salon feel more welcoming and, in turn, a better place for nail specialists to work.”
