Scratch puts the spotlight on an eye-catching floral nail design and the talented tech behind it…

Elizabeth Jones

Elizabeth Jones, from Rugby, Warwickshire, has been a qualified nail technician for over three years. “I have always been a bit of an art geek. Before nails, I studied Theatre Production Design, so you can say I have always had an artistic side,” she says. “It was the 3D nail art that drew me in. I have always been one to decorate my nails, so one day I picked up my polishes and just started playing. I gained my qualifications with the Open Study College and just kept practicing.

“I have lots of salon experience but I am now a mobile technician with my own business, so any chance I get I am practicing some kind of funky nail art on either myself or my lovely clients. I’m never too far away from my nail art kit, I just love designing more and more extravagant things. If it makes peoples heads turn then I know I’m doing my job properly.”

This floral acrylic design started off as an idea that Elizabeth had in her head before she put pencil to paper. “I imagined what Mother Nature’s hands might look like grasping onto life. As usual, I grabbed my sketchbook and started designing. When I think of nature I instantly think of summer and all the bright colours of the season. Roses are my favourite flower and I loved making daisy chains as a child.

“For the base colour of the nails I used a selection of Artistic Colour Gloss from Artistic Nail Design, including Baby Cakes, Pin-Up Purple and Polka-Dottie Hottie,” Elizabeth continues. “I added some electric blue transfer foil from Crystal Nails to contrast the neon pink.”

For both sets of flowers, Elizabeth used a mixed selection of colours from NSI Nails Technailcolour Acrylic Powders and NAIO Nails acrylic colours in Fuschia Pink, Canary Diamond, Vivid Violet, Palm Leaves and White.

“My most favourite brush to use for all of my 3D work is the Mini 3D Brush from Crystal Nails,” she says. “For the roses, I made each individual petal and leaf and gradually bonded them all together, before using clear acrylic to fix them to the nail. Then for the daisies I made little flat circles and used a cuticle pusher to score the petal lines once the acrylic dried slightly, before adding yellow in the middle. I added a bit of nail caviar in the shade Pink to add a little bit more texture to the nails.”
