Why you should train to offer tanning this year

In the first of her 2017 blog posts, Kissed by Mii tanning expert, Shelley Henderson, reveals why there’s no time like the present to add tanning to your service menu…

I remember when I caught the tanning bug. I was studying fashion and business at college, regularly working with models. I realised that a tanned model always brought any outfit alive. Not long after, I moved into the world of beauty and trained in tanning.

Now, when I visit a spa or salon as an area manager, I explain the benefits of training in tanning to prospective clients. With easy-to-assemble booths, pop up tents and lightweight guns, it has never been easier to take on tanning. Learning new skills and having transferrable skills is important as it allows your business to offer a variety of services to customers, as well as adding additional income for your business. For those looking at mobile spray tanning, it’s a lucrative business – a quick treatment that is simple to set up and great for pamper parties.

Like manicures and pedicures, tanning is an express treatment that gives that instant feel good factor and (if you just add make-up) allows you to offer a full service for proms and bridal parties. Offering these services together means convenience for your clients and added revenue for you, through both treatments and retail. You can also highlight your services with promotions that offer one with the other at a discount.

Tanning is a competitive market, so make sure the system you choose will stand out from the crowd. Consider product ingredients, the brand’s treatment protocol, equipment, space you will need, retail opportunities, and the on-going training and support the supplier offers – as these are all key in making tanning a success for your business.

Beauty technicians need confidence to deliver the best results and stay ahead of the competition. It’s vital to have complete, in-depth, product and application knowledge. It is important for all salon staff to attend training and have the know-how to offer clients – having product knowledge is key for your reception staff too. Think of training as an investment, as a professionally-delivered service will keep clients coming back time and time again.

Check out the training courses that the supplier offers – Gerrard International offers flexible training options – from a full day Kissed by Mii induction course for those new to tanning to in-spa workshop style sessions for experienced tanners. Our training courses, for example, include thorough product knowledge, demonstrating the skills needed to achieve a flawless finish, as well as tips and techniques to give your treatments the edge.

Don’t forget to keep the January germs at bay – the only bug you need to catch this month is the tanning bug (just like I did)!

Love Shelley x
