On Thursday I was lucky enough to kick off London Fashion Week backstage on the nail team for VIN + OMI’s AW19 showcase.

While I’ve reported backstage for a few seasons, I’ve never had the chance to put my tekking skills to the test! A few weeks before the show, nail lead, Kristine Toce, invited me to be part of the team – and I jumped at the chance!

The nail team also saw:

  • Helen Burton-Ward
  • Carla Ryan Griffiths
  • Dana Squibb
  • Rasa Juryte
  • Mariola Malik
  • Julia Ivanova

The show took place at Liverpool Street’s Andaz Hotel and was titled ‘Planet Rewind’ saw a focus on the design house’s eco-textiles. This season, key pieces from the collection saw ‘flowers’ created from rPET fabrics and metal foil from recycled cans. The runway show also saw the return of supermodel Jodi Kidd after her ten year break from the catwalk.

In line with the show’s theme of rewinding, the nails were kept natural, simple and neat. The nails were cleaned, neatened, buffed to a high shine and moisturised with Kinetics Grapeseed Nail Serum and Hand & Body Lotion. We were kept busy manicuring over 40 models, but it was so satisfying seeing them looking at their hands in wonder when we’d finished. A few models even stated they felt like they’d had a pamper session!

Black, bamboo-dervived Patch Strips plasters were applied in a random order across the fingers to represent the need to repair the planet. The look also saw handmade, felt ‘bandages’ crafted from wool and fabric made from salvaged plastic. Interwoven in the fabric, dried flowers, plants and moss were scattered. These strips of fabrics were sewn into wraps which were then worn around the palm. The final looks was so striking!

I had such an amazing time being part of Kristine’s team; it was such a surreal experience stepping out from behind the camera and picking up my tools, but thoroughly enjoyable! I loved working with the team and seeing the show at the end was an incredible feeling, knowing I had contributed in a small way!
